 | | Using Free Content by Aaron Wilmot | Once you have built your website and decided what it's main purpose is, you will then want to see to it that it has adequate content. The amount of content you require varies depending on the goal of your site. If that goal of the site is to achieve a high search engine ranking for competitive keywords (or keyword phrase) on a big search engine like Google, then your site may require a great deal of content. But if your site is going to depend heavily on return visitors then you may not require so much content but you will probably instead need the type of updated content which will draw return visitors to your site like a blog, a newsfeed, or perhaps an updated article feed. If your site does not take orders or require much search engine or return traffic, then you may need very little in the way of content. For instance, if you have a a small Vermont hobby shop site. You may want to have a website with your contact information and directions to your store, basically a WWW address to put on your business cards and stationary. In this case you may not need search engine traffic or return visitors so your content needs are minimal, But if, on the other hand, you had an e-commerce site designed to compete on the internet with other e-commerce sites over a high-traffic keyword phrase such as "software products" or "Florida vacation packages", then your content needs will likely be substantial due to the heavy competition of these phrases on the search engines.
Why you need Free Content
After you have completed the task of building your site your next step is to look at which type of content you require. No matter hoe much content your site has to begin with, you will certainly require more later. Content for your site could come in the form of articles(whether you pen them or obtain them from an article directory), research reports, weblogs or anything else of percieved value to your site visitors. One example could be the archiving of old newsletters and/or articles on your website. The search engine robots really eat up this kind of stuff because for them to be considered relevent they need to produce relevent results and this generally comes down to content. They know that that poor search engines have fluff results but quality engines such as Google make their visitors happy with relevent search results, and happy visitors are return visitors many times over. So you are simply giving them what they want. The search engines that do not produce quality results fast become dead. As proof of this, many of the top engines of 1997, such as www worm and infoseek, do not exist today, while many top ones like excite and webcrawler are no longer major players. So if you just give their customers what they want, which is good, relevant content, the search engines will give you what you want-visitors. If you need to add whole pages of content to your website, especially pages with keywords related to your site, then adding articles is perhaps the easiest way to go. There are a number of sites that offer free articles for reprint, like zino's.com, to Home Business Articlesand and freesticky.com. What is wonderful about these websites is that you can look through their archives to find exactly the right article ( or perhaps groups of articles) for your website, weblog or e-newsletter. So whether your site is about marketing, skiing or fishing, you should be able to find closely related and relevant articles quite easily. The only catch with adding an article to your site is that you are required to add the author's 'byline' or 'resource box' at the end of the article which usually has their url and/or contact information. In many instances, however, a single article could be spread out and provide several pages of content for your website. Creating multiple pages of content that link back to your main page is quite important since each of those pages adds to your site's link popularity in the eyes of the major search engines, and an abundance of good content will give your site increased credibility. It appears that when a search engine spider visits your site and follows all the links, it determines the structure of the site from it's content links. If your site is deemed to be a content-dense site then the relevency of the site is increased dramatically. In addition to articles, you may also want to add other types of free content to your site from a site like bravenet.com or to AaronsFreebies.comand There you can obtain free guestbooks, free message boards, guestmaps, live chat boards as well as e-mail forms. Guestbooks and forums are particularly good content because they are constantly being automatically updated and refreshed by your users. Webmaster Engine dot com can provide you with free templates and clip-art for your site, while freesticky.com provides free message boards, News headlines, Cartoons and Jokes, Stock Tickers and Weather reports. Good content is essential good search engine positioning and plenty of returning visitors. The saying "Content is King" has never been more true!
